Phosphorescent Masterbatch for Plastics Molding
Phosphorescent Masterbatch (often referred to as Glow-in-the-Dark Masterbatch) is a high-performance functional additive designed to give thermoplastic molded parts the ability to emit light in total darkness. Unlike standard pigments, these masterbatches contain concentrated strontium aluminate crystals that store energy from light sources and release it slowly over several hours.
Photoluminescent masterbatch is specifically formulated for high-clarity and engineering resins, ensuring that the phosphorescent effect is maximized without compromising the structural integrity of the molded component.

Phosphorescent Masterbatch Technical Features
- High Brilliance & Afterglow: Utilizing rare-earth doped strontium aluminate, providing an afterglow that is significantly brighter and longer-lasting than traditional zinc sulfide additives.
- Thermal Stability: Engineered to withstand the high temperatures required for injection molding and extrusion, stable up to 280 C to 300 C.
- Optimized Dispersion: Specially treated to ensure uniform distribution within the melt, preventing “streaking” or “clumping” in the final molded part.
- Non-Toxic & Safe: Free from radioactive materials and heavy metals, making it suitable for consumer goods and toys (compliant with EN 71-3 ,ASTM and RoHS).
Phosphorescent masterbatch Molding & Processing Guidelines
To achieve the best luminous results during the molding process, the following guidelines should be observed:
Recommended Loading Rates
- Standard Parts: 5% - 15%
- High-Visibility/Safety Parts: 20% - 50%
Machine Settings
- Shear Force: Use low-to-medium shear. High shear can fracture the phosphorescent crystals, leading to a “graying” effect and reduced light output.
- Back Pressure: Maintain minimal back pressure during the plasticizing stage to protect the crystal structure.
- Surface Finish: A polished mold surface (high gloss) enhances light absorption and emission, whereas a textured surface may diffuse the glow.
Base Resin Compatibility
For maximum luminosity, it is recommended to use transparent or translucent base resins such as:
- PP / PE / PS (Standard consumer goods)
- PC / PMMA / ABS (Engineering applications)
- Not: Using opaque or dark-colored base resins will significantly mask the phosphorescent effect.
Main Applications
- Safety Gear: Fire extinguisher markers, emergency exit components, and protective helmets.
- Consumer Electronics: Remote control buttons, phone cases, and light switch covers.
- Sporting Goods: Camping equipment, golf balls, glow shoes and bicycle accessories.
- Novelty & Toys: Action figures, decorative stars, glow in the dark toys and glow-in-the-dark containers.
Depolama ve işleme
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Keep the package sealed to prevent moisture absorption, which can cause surface defects (splay) during molding.
- Pre-drying is recommended at $70^\circ\text{C}$ for 2 hours if the material has been exposed to humidity.
